Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Bowen therapy?
Bowen is a soft tissue therapy in which the practitioner performs specific, gentle rolling motions with their fingers and thumbs at strategic points on the body. These manoeuvres stimulate a healing response that can be effective in bringing about a reduction in pain and a return to optimal function.
  • What conditions do you treat?
  • How do 'mobile treatments' work?
James travels in the local area surrounding Bideford, Barnstaple, and Braunton, offering Bowen treatments in clients' homes. He will bring his treatment bed along to an appointment so all that is needed is a quiet, modest space in the client's house in which to do the session.
  • Are you insured?
I am fully insured and am a member of the Bowen Therapist Professional Association (BTPA), whose standards I professionally abide by.
  • How many treatments do I need?
The number of appointments required varies for each individual depending on how they respond to treatment and the severity of the case. Typically, three treatments are needed in order to generate sustainable, long-term results. On your first visit, James will assess your condition and outline how many treatments he believes would be needed to solve your issue.
  • What happens after my course of treatment?
Typically after a course of treatment, clients keep in check via 'maintenance appointments' to stay balanced and pain-free. Individuals that have significant injuries, high levels of stress, etc may see James more frequently for maintenance sessions than those with balanced, active lifestyles and healthy exercise regimes.
  • What should I wear for my appointment?
Please arrive in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Clients are treated fully clothed and are not required to undress during the appointment
  • Is Bowen therapy safe and does it hurt?
There are no contraindications for Bowen therapy. It is a safe treatment that is suitable for everyone of all ages and levels of health. Bowen treatments are gentle and non-invasive.
  • Who is Bowen therapy suitable for?
Everybody can benefit from Bowen, from babies to the elderly, and office workers to professional athletes. James' treatment style is adaptable to suit the individual needs of each client seeking care.
